More "Bun" Stuff (Get It?...More Fun Stuff)

....nevermind. I can be such a cornball sometimes. lol

Anyway, as the title says, I will be talking about buns. I know buns are pretty boring but I am on a mission to retain length (as cost effectively as possible) and dang it I WILL get there!

Today I stopped by Sally's and got a little donut bun base thingy. It's called the "Hair Styler" and it cost me around $4. I looks pretty similar to the image below:

I selected the black mesh donut and that was that. I should also point out that the mesh appears to be adjustable so SL hair (probably NL too!) can use this donut bun thingy. The instructions for use are extremely easy. Basically all you have to do is:

1) Gather hair into a ponytail and secure with an elastic band
2) Pull ponytail through Hair Styler Foundation and slide it to base of ponytail
3) Arrange hair around Hair Styler Foundation and secure with bobby pins

That's it! You're done. As long has you have some bobby pins and a hair tie, you should be good to go! It is a very quick easy style and it's a great protective style for those of you trying to get through the very difficult SL stage. Below I have a pic of the bun. The picture isn't the greatest but I hope it gives you an idea of what it looks like!

Lil Wayne, Shanell Deny Pregnancy Rumors

According to the reports, extremely virile rapper Lil Wayne has yet another baby on the way, this one with Young Money artist Shanell. This is hardly surprising since Wayne, who has fathered four children with four different women (two in the last six months) loves his babies(!), but now the Young Money boss and protege are vehemently denying the rumors.

"Basically it came from a corny rumor that escalated," Shanell told MTV. "First I was dating him, then I was his girlfriend, then we were getting married, then we were settling down and now I'm pregnant. It's so foolish we've haven't paid it any attention."

The singer/songwriter -- sister of former Danity Kane member D. Woods -- met Wayne while working as a back-up dancer for Ne-Yo. She's been credited for connecting Wayne with producer Bangladesh and aiding in the birth of 'A Milli,' and was quickly brought into the fold, singing and touring with Young Money.

When a photo circulated depicting the two artists sharing an embrace, the rumor mill began to churn.

"We're taking a picture," she explained. "All the rest of the rumors were kinda funny except that one...When my mother called me like, 'Um?,' [I was] like, 'No! Are you serious?' I don't care about the rumors, but I just want people to know that I'm not pregnant. I've got an album coming out, I'm a dancer, I'm in shape and children are not anywhere in my future."

Wayne also addressed the rumors in a recent Ustream video. "Let me clear up this rumor, man: Shanell is not pregnant from me," Wayne said. "Shanell isn't even pregnant! Period. Clear that up right now, man. Everybody talking about Shanell pregnant by ... No, she not even pregnant. Period."

Wayne is currently awaiting sentencing for a 2007 gun charge, shooting videos at a manic pace and receiving more root canals than a vegetable garden, while Shanell prepares her forthcoming debut.

Ludacris: "When you listen to music, you should be able to put yourself in a mindset or a mental place where you can picture most of the things that’s going on—like a movie. It’s like a motion picture album. That’s the best way I can describe it."

Akon leaves Capital after just one show

R&B star Akon has become a contender for the shortest-running DJ in 95.8 Capital FM's history, parting company with the London station after just one show.

The multiplatinum-selling and Grammy nominated singer joined Capital earlier this month, with the station's group programme director, Paul Jackson, promising "London is going to love him!".

However, his tenure on the Global Radio station lasted for just one two-hour show, broadcast between 7pm and 9pm on 13 February. The Saturday slot was last week filled by its previous incumbent, Dave Kelly. A Global Radio spokesman said Akon was unable to continue due to other commitments, including working on a new album.

"Due to Akon's commitments, including working on a brand new album, we won't be broadcasting a regular show on 95.8 Capital FM for the time being," added the spokesman. "Our conversations about future shows are ongoing as we explore other opportunities that may work for both of us."

Mo'Nique wins BAFTA Award for Precious

Award season is here and BiggaBreakfast is keeping tabs on all of the events, such as Sunday's British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, where Mo'Nique took home the Best Supporting Actress for her dramatic turn in the critically-acclaimed film Precious, making her the odds-on favorite to pick up the same honor at next month's Oscars.

PHOTOS: Stars Shine At BAFTA
Mo'Nique's BAFTA honors mark her 23rd major award season win for her performance in the Lee Daniels-directed film, also having collected a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award and Sundance Special Jury Prize. She was not at the award show to accept, as Daniels collected the award on her behalf.

The BAFTA win puts Mo'Nique as a heavy favorite to win the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award over fellow Oscar sleeper Anna Kendrick, whose breakout performance in Up in the Air has garnered her only four awards in comparison. Penélope Cruz (Nine), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart) and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) are also nominated in the category.

Other notable winners from Sunday's affair include Colin Firth, who took home Leading Actor honors for his role in A Single Man; and Carey Mulligan, who won Leading Actress award for An Education. Kathryn Bigelow’s war film The Hurt Locker garnered her six awards -- including Best Film and Best Director -- while her ex-husband James Cameron's box office behemoth Avatar won just two awards on its’ eight nominations.  Bigelow is the first woman to win a BAFTA as Best Director.

The Academy Awards will air on ABC March 7 from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.

As expected, Sade’s Soldier of Love debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart with 501,655 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That beat previous estimates that the CD could sell between 375,000 and 400,000 copies. The CD is also No. 1 in 10 additional countries, including Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, Dubai, Poland, Greece, Japan, Portugal and Spain.

According to Billboard, Solder of Love gives Sade her first No. 1 debut and her best sales week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Soldier of Love is Sade’s second No. 1 album. The first, Promise, spent two weeks at the top of the chart in 1986.

The new album is also Sade’s first CD since Lovers Rock was released in November of 2000. It debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 370,000 sold in its first week. Since its release, Lovers Rock has sold 3.9 million in the U.S.

According to Billboard, Sade has notched eight top 10 albums in a row on the Billboard 200 – every one released since Diamond Life in 1985. That total includes six studio CDs, one greatest hits and one live recording.
The first single from Solider of Love, the title track, is No. 1 on the Smooth Jazz Top 20.

Sade will perform Saturday (February 20) on The Wanda Sykes Show.

R.I.O (aka Rio Nelson) - Manchester's Finest

Like everyone else in the country right now, Manchester rapper R.I.O – better known as 24-year-old Rio Nelson to his friends – has been debating whether people in the public eye should be role models.

As one of Britain’s most ascendant young rap artists, Rio is in no doubt about his own role model duties. So much so that he’s shunning the usual gigging channels in order to go on a tour of secondary schools next month. But to the big issue of the day: should professional footballers be setting a good moral example?
Click on link to hear R.I.O's Debute single Narrow Roads
Oddly enough, Rio might well have followed a career in professional football himself --

-- he had trials for Manchester City as a teenager, and, thru  his Caribbean heritage, Rio has also represented the small island nation St Vincent at international youth level.

Whilst Rio never made it as a footballer, you sense if he had, he most certainly would have been the sporting role model John Terry could only dream about.
“It’s a weird one innit?” Rio ponders, cradling a glass of orange juice in a plush Castlefield bar.

“Footballers are in a whole different world of celebrity these days.

“It’s not like the old days when players could go have a few drinks then play a cup final the day after! “But if you’re in the public eye and you can inspire people from that position, you need to embrace it.

“Kids look up to you. If they have a special talent, whether it’s football or music or whatever, they need to look up to someone to inspire them – show how far those talents can take you in life. As a role model, you can’t afford to let people down.”

Rio Nelson, needless to say, has no intention of letting anyone down.

'Genuine pop stars'

Born and raised in Moss Side, followed by a brief stint playing football in the Caribbean, before returning to Manchester to re-launch himself as a heavyweight rap contender – it’s fair to say Rio Nelson has a spectacular life story to tell.

But most pleasing is how Rio chooses to tell his story – by way of the most arresting and explosive electro-grime to have emerged from this city since, well, ever.

Narrow Roads, released next month, Rio’s position at the forefront of the Manchester urban pack owes much to his unique, ferocious rapping style, his breathtaking lyrical genius, and most importantly, an ambitious drive to aim for the stars – while never forgetting his responsibility to, of course, be a fitting role model.

“British urban music is in a really amazing place right now,” he enthuses.

“A few years ago, a group like So Solid Crew might have struggled to break through ‘cos they were boxed into this ‘urban’ category. But now, you look at the charts – from Dizzee to Tinchy to Chipmunk – and no-one treats them any differently.

“They are all genuine pop stars who reach out to everyone, not just people who are into urban music.

“It’s really inspiring. People like Dizzee inspired me, opening up doors for similar young artists, and I’m hoping to do the same.”

Rio’s level-headedness owes much to his eventful upbringing.

Born in Moss Side, the youngest of three brothers, he was raised in Manchester until the age of 16 when his mother relocated the whole family to the small Caribbean island of St Vincent.

Already a talented footballer, Rio represented St Vincent at youth international level in a World Cup Qualifier, but decided to cut his footballing career short to return to Manchester.

Self-confidence

CityLife wonders what enticed him back to rainy Manchester.
He smiles: “I simply missed Manchester! I really did.

“I spent my childhood in Manchester and I really missed the lifestyle.

“Don’t get me wrong, life in the Caribbean is amazing. But the pace of life was very slow and there were few people there my age.

“I was really getting into making music, so I needed to keep busy.

“Manchester is the perfect place to keep the mind busy.”

Indeed it was. Aged 18 and having drawn a line under his professional football ambitions, Rio threw himself into his music-making, sprinkling his talents across all platforms of the Manc urban world. From releasing his own hugely successful mix-tapes to working with rap crews like Hit Em Up, and most crucially, hooking up with dance producer Jodz and singer Chris Royal to score his incredible crossover hit Dance Like Me.

Braggadocio – bragging or boasting – might be part and parcel of the rap world, yet Rio wisely uses that self-confidence to step outside of his MC comfort zone.

Much like fellow Manc urban stars Wrigley and Envy (the latter the recipient of CityLife’s best track of 2009 award), Rio isn’t afraid to reclaim terms like grime and give them his own autobiographical, Mancunian spin.
As demonstrated by his debut single His debut single Narrow Roads, released next month on Rare Breed Recordings, bears testament to this broad canvas approach – combining dense melodic harmonies and thunderous grime beats with the sort of stern, fabled narratives reminiscent of Dizzee Rascal’s earlier albums.

'Open-minded'

“I don’t mind being labelled a grime artist – grime still has the same meaning,” Rio insists.

“It’s still about laying down ideas and putting them out there.

“Grime is still an important form of self-expression for so many young kids up and down the country. But for me, I want to take my music worldwide, and build up a bigger following.

“The likes of Dizzee have proven you can build on those grime foundations and take it somewhere else – grime is more like urban pop these days. That’s something I want to do.

“When I first started out making music, there were so many artists in Manchester doing grime tunes and it was becoming a bit predictable.

“No-one wanted to step out of that comfort zone.

“I wanted to change that and be more open-minded with my music – whether it’s grime, electro, pop, I’m happy to soak up all these influences.”

New Protective Style to Add to the List

I have come to a conclusion.

That conclusion is that during the winter (at least), I cannot wear my hair down for an extended period of time. I wore my hair down on Monday and I played with it all day. ALL DAY. There wasn't a time where I didn't have my hands in my hair. Just playing. Of course my hair didn't like that. It would start to break if I played with it too much. So that night I went looking for a new protective style...well actually for a bun style. I figured my hair is long enough now. After searching YouTube for an hour I came across the Southern Tease bun.

I thought to myself: this bun is perfect! You don't have to have APL hair to do it either (just keep in mind that with shorter hair, your bun will be smaller so don't set any unrealistic expectations)! So I got up and experimented for awhile. My bun didn't really look like a bun...more like a swoosh but it looked like a cute little updo! At the time I had to secure the bun with some bobby pins (but I don't recommend that- if you can get some claw clips) I then jazzed it up with some decorative clips. Whole updo takes about 30 seconds to do and it keeps your hair up off your shoulders. My hair has been like this since Tuesday and I love it. I really want to hurry up and get past the length I am at so I can enjoy my hair more. I guess it all takes patience. Anyway, I just wanted to share this protective style for you ladies...just in case you are trying to think of ways to style your hair!

Beyonce's Dad Ordered to Pay Child Support

Beyonce's father, Mathew Knowles, has just been ordered to support baby Nixon, at least temporarily ...

TMZ has learned. An L.A. judge just ordered Knowles to pay $8,200 a month in child support, retroactive to February 1. Knowles must also pay 100% ...

Alexsandra Wright claims she had an 18-month relationship with Knowles and he's the baby daddy of Nixon -- born February 4.

Wright's lawyer, Neal Hersh, went to court today asking for support and the judge granted it.

But Knowles will take a DNA test March 1 ... and the long-term support issues hinge on the outcome.

It's interesting -- Knowles has not flat out denied he's the daddy. And in fact, he gave Alexsandra $10,000 in January to cover uninsured medical costs and baby stuff.

UPDATE: The Judge ordered Knowles to pay Wright $20,750 for the month of January.

Mathew Knowles -- This Might Be Your Baby Boy

TMZ has obtained a photo of the alleged love child of Mathew Knowles -- aka Beyonce's dad -- and while Knowles has yet to take a DNA test ... we kinda see a resemblance.

Alexsandra Wright -- who claims she had an 18 month affair with Knowles -- filed a paternity suit against him back in October and gave birth on February 4. Wright's lawyers are in court today, trying to get Knowles to pony up child support -- so far, sources say, he hasn't paid a cent.

For his part, Mathew has skirted the issue, telling TMZ, "We are not aware of the birth of a child. Mr. Knowles has never had a DNA test. These rumors are untrue."

Born Michael Jeffrey Jordan (1963 – Present)

"By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time."

____________________

After a standout career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he led the Tar Heels to a National Championship in 1982, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as a league star, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness". He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball.

In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". Although Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993–94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995-96 NBA season. Getting Through this Learning Curve is a BEAST!

I know it may seem like I have this hair care thing down. However, just like you, I am feeling my way through the process as well. Learning what is good for my hair, at this length, has been a pretty difficult task for me.

Let me explain.....

When I started my healthy hair journey, I just wanted to stop the massive breakage my hair was experiencing. The breakage was so bad that every time I touched my hair, massive amounts of hair would break off. I had finally had enough and began to look up what I could do to remedy that. Taking care of my hair at this stage was easy. I laid off of the relaxers for 8 months, I began to wash and DC my hair weekly, and I cut down on my direct heat usage. As you can imagine, my hair began to bounce back.

Then I cut it.

Since I cut my hair, I had to learn how to take care of short hair. Taking care of my hair during this time was easy as well. I would still wash and deep condition weekly but since I was using more heat, I deep conditioned more. I took extra care to alternate between protein and moisture conditioners. I continued to stretch my relaxers and began to dabble in low manipulation hair styles.

Now we're here.

My hair is longer (which is awesome) but figuring out what it likes has been somewhat of a task. Here are some issues going on with me:

1) Shedding: I have figured out when the shedding phase of my hair growth process is--winter time. I have been shedding like a freaking dog lately. I'm not alarmed or anything since I believe I am shedding at the higher end of the 50-200 shed hairs per day range. However, it is getting on my NERVES! On Friday, I ordered the Alter Ego garlic deep conditioner. Hopefully this will curb some of the shedding.

2) I have to deep condition 2x a week. When I deep condition 1x a week, my hair isn't as happy as it could be. However, I'm finding that when I deep condition more, my hair just responds better overall. Now I have to suck it up and begin buying more conditioner.

3)When I use deep conditioners and Porosity Control, I have to specifically focus on my ends. It dawned on me last night to just saturate my ends on conditioner and porosity control. Let me tell you, my ends are thanking me for it. Usually, when I deep condition, I pay special attention to my roots, then coat the rest of my hair. Also, when my hair was shorter it was easier to ensure that my ends got enough conditioner (I mean, my ends were right there!) Now I have to learn to establish some sort of balance between my roots and my ends.

4) I can air dry earlier on in my stretch but cannot later on in my stretch. Self explanatory.

These are 4 truths of my hair that I am just now discovering. This hair journey hasn't been easy and I am learning that I have to adjust my routine for every milestone that I hit.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Etc.

So a lot has been going on for me hair wise....

Last Friday, I relaxed my hair. Like before, I used Silk Elements Lye relaxer (mild strength). I have to say that I am in love with the Silk Elements relaxer. It loosens my curl just enough and it doesn't suck all the life out of my hair (which I like). I definitely will be using this relaxer in the future.

My hair is still growing. I am really hoping that I am able to make it past the SL hurdle. I know it is a tough growth stage for a lot of ladies but I am hoping. My hair is inching toward SL and I probably won't take length check pics until my next relaxer (probably around May or June).

I have to learn how to keep my hands out of my hair. I wore my hair out Monday and I kept playing in it. I have learned that my hair really doesn't break unless I keep on messing around in it. Note to self: stop stop STOP playing in my hair.

That is it for this post...just some random thoughts about my hair while I'm doing some deep conditioning....

'BORN ON THIS DAY' - 'BOB MARLEY' born ...Robert Nesta Marley aka The Reggae Legend

Singer, musician, songwriter. Born on February 6, 1945, in Jamaica. Bob Marley helped introduce reggae music to the world and remains one of its most beloved artists to this day. The son of a black teenage mother and much older, later absent white father, he spent his early years in the rural village known as Nine Miles in the parish of St. Ann.

One of his childhood friends in St. Ann was Neville "Bunny" O'Riley Livingston. Attending the same school, the two shared a love of music. Bunny inspired Bob to learn to play the guitar. Later Livingston's father and Marley's mother became involved, and they all lived together for a time in Kingston, according to Christopher John Farley's Before the Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley.

Arriving in Kingston in the late 1950s, Marley lived in Trench Town, one of the city's poorest neighborhoods. He struggled in poverty, but he found inspiration in the music around him. Trench Town had a number of successful local performers and was considered the Motown of Jamaica. Sounds from the United States also drifted in over the radio and through jukeboxes. Marley liked such artists as Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, and the Drifters.

Marley and Livingston devoted much of their time to music. Under the guidance of Joe Higgs, Marley worked on improving his singing abilities. He met another student of Higgs, Peter McIntosh (later Peter Tosh) who would play an important role in Marley's career.

A local record producer, Leslie Kong, liked Marley's vocals and had him record a few singles, the first of which was "Judge Not" released in 1962. While he did not fare well as a solo artist, Marley found some success joining forces with his friends. In 1963, Marley, Livingston, and McIntosh formed the Wailing Wailers. Their first single, "Simmer Down," went to the top of the Jamaican charts in January 1964. By this time, the group also included Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso, and Cherry Smith.

The group became quite popular in Jamaica, but they had difficulty making it financially. Braithewaite, Kelso, and Smith left the group. The remaining members drifted a part for a time. Marley went to the United States where his mother was now living. However, before he left, he married Rita Anderson on February 10, 1966.

After eight months, Marley returned to Jamaica. He reunited with Livingston and McIntosh to form the Wailers. Around this time, Marley was exploring his spiritual side and developing a growing interest in the Rastafarian movement. Both religious and political, the Rastafarian movement started in Jamaica in 1930s and drew its beliefs from many sources, including Jamaican-born black nationalist Marcus Garvey, the Old Testament, and their African heritage and culture.

For a time in the late 1960s, Marley worked with pop singer Johnny Nash. Nash scored a hit with Marley's song, "Stir It Up," around the world. The Wailers also worked with producer Lee Perry during this era and some of their successful songs together included "Trench Town Rock," "Soul Rebel," and "Four Hundred Years."

Nioxin Hair Vitamin Experience: Week 4

I finally finished my month supply of Nioxin Hair Vitamins.

And I'm not sure how I feel about it. Yeah I said it.

On hand, my nails grew faster and stronger. My skin didn't break out either. Unfortunately, I can't say it did much for my hair. Part of me feels like I should try another bottle, just to be sure. However, spending $20+ on some hair vitamins that don't do much for my hair is not the business. Another just says to make sure my diet is on point. I dunno. I guess I'll figure it out soon.

What A Difference A Year Makes....

January 29, 2010 marked exactly one year since I cut my hair! Ladies I have made so much progress since then! I thought it would be fun to take you guys through my journey since then and tell you the story behind it. When I cut my hair, my hair was this length:

I had cut my hair that length in November to give my crown a chance to catch up with the rest of my hair (when I started my journey in March 08, my crown had broken off pretty badly). Anyway, back to Jan 29, 2009, I had been thinking about cutting my hair that whole day. Finally, that afternoon, I had made an appointment with my stylist to cut my hair--that day.

I go into the shop and tell the stylist what I wanted. I got my touch up and sat in my stylist's chair. She asked me one last time if I was sure I wanted to cut my hair. I replied "yes" and my stylist got to cutting. As she started to cut, the shop got dead quiet. So quiet that you can hear a rat pee on soft cotton. I looked up and everyone in the shop was watching the stylist cut my hair. I commented "Boy, it sure is quiet in here" That's when the flood of comments came in. I heard everything from "I don't know why you want to cut all that hair" to "I'm trying to get my hair back to the point where she was, and she's cutting it." Whatever. I didn't care. Hair grows back. I walked out the shop with this cut:

My year of growth has been marked with remarkable progress (as you ladies know)! By December, my hair was grazing SL (my longest layer). I have surpassed my original length by leaps and bounds!

I am excited to see where my hair journey takes me and what lengths I will achieve!

"Why Do You Wear Wigs When You Have All That Hair?"

...or "Confessions of a Protective Styler"

I had went to the beauty supply store yesterday to purchase a wig. I am about 12 weeks post relaxer right now and don't want to relax my hair just yet. So, I thought it would be a good idea to purchase another, longer wig since the only wig I have currently is really short. As I'm trying on a wig, another customer comes up to me and asks me about my hair (apparently she had be looking at my hair since I entered the store). She asks if it is all mine (yes) and who does it (me). She then asked why I wear wigs when I have all that hair (her words, not mine). Secretly, I have a real catty response for questions like that but I just replied "I wanted to try a different style for awhile."

I don't know if I like having to justify my protective styles you guys. Part of me is flattered by the the questions and the compliments but the other part of me is like...leave me alone (lol). I guess this is something that I will have to go through until I make it past SL (I'm getting there slowly but surely). I will post pics of the new wig later on when I get home!

ETA: took a pic with my camera phone. Kinda fuzzy but y'all get the idea!
