Martin Scorsese's adventure film “Hugo” which explores the early days of cinema from a child’s point of view led the 2012 Academy Awards with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director while “The Artist” earned 10 as George Clooney and Meryl Streep emerged as frontrunners for best actor and actress. The nominees for Academy Awards 2012 were announced on Tuesday morning, January 24 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater by Tom Sherak, AMPAS president, and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence. The 2012 Oscars will air on February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California and Billy Crystal will serve as host for the evening, replacing Eddie Murphy, who was originally slated to host.
The full list of nominees for the Academy Awards were revealed on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles by Tom Sherak, AMPAS president, and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence
The 2012 Oscars takes place on February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, hosted once again by Billy Crystal

… followed by the silent, black-and-white film “The Artist” with 10 nominations. This French silent film recently topped the Golden Globe film nominations with six nominations including best picture, comedy, best director and best screenplay
The other nominations for Best Picture are The Descendants, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
Alongside with “War Horse”, Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball” was given six nominations: picture, actor in a supporting role (Jonah Hill), actor in a leading role (Brad Pitt), adapted screenplay, film editing and sound mixing
“The Descendants” also receives five nominations including Best Picture, Best film editing, Best actor in a leading role (George Clooney), Best director (Alexander Payne) and Best adapted screenplay
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” picked up five pieces: actress in a leading role (Rooney Mara), cinematography, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing
Followed by “Midnight in Paris” with four nominations
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” won three nominations including sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects
Two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep also picked up her 17th Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady”…
… while Golden Globe winner George Clooney got his fourth performing nomination, for Best Actor in "The Descendants” which also receives five nominations including Best Picture
